ASHRAE maintains service-life data for HVAC equipment, drawn from large samples and published in the Applications Handbook. For a residential single or split-package air conditioner, the median service life is 15 years. Rooftop units, single-zone or multi-zone: also 15. Window units: 10.
The word doing the work in that sentence is median.
What a median actually tells you
A median of 15 years means half of the population lasted longer and half did not. It says nothing about which half any particular unit lands in, and it is not a warranty, a guarantee, or a prediction about your equipment.
The interesting question is what sorts the two halves. And here the installation-fault research is directly relevant, because most of the faults it describes are not just efficiency problems — they are stress.
Faults are wear
Consider what the documented common faults do mechanically:
- Low refrigerant charge means less refrigerant returning to cool the compressor motor, and higher discharge temperatures. The Department of Energy's 2018 review found undercharge in 29–78 % of systems depending on the study.
- Low indoor airflow — found "more than 50 % of the time in all regions studied" — lowers evaporator temperature and can return liquid refrigerant to a compressor built to handle vapour.
- Overcharge raises head pressure. NIST measured 6 % greater total power at 30 % overcharge; the compressor is doing that extra work every cycle.
- Restricted condenser airflow from a dirty coil raises discharge pressure and temperature for the same reason a blocked radiator overheats an engine.
Every one of those is a condition under which the system still runs. It cools the house. It does not throw an error. And it is grinding away at the component that costs the most to replace.
The honest limit of this argument
Here is where we have to be careful, because this is exactly the point where HVAC marketing usually invents a statistic.
We could not find a credible primary study quantifying how many years of service life a given fault removes. It is a hard thing to measure — it requires following large numbers of instrumented systems for a decade or more, and to our knowledge that study has not been published. Anyone quoting you a precise figure for it is almost certainly repeating something with no source behind it.
So we will not give you a number. What we will say is the part that follows from established engineering: components operated outside their design envelope wear faster than components operated inside it, and the faults documented above put systems outside that envelope for years at a time without anyone noticing.
What that implies
If you cannot know in advance which side of the median your unit lands on, and if the conditions that push it to the wrong side are common, invisible, and cumulative — then the useful intervention is early detection. Not because a monitor extends equipment life by some advertised amount, but because a fault that gets corrected in month two has less time to do damage than the same fault corrected in year four.
